As fine as this may all sound you need to understand that unless you attend an accredited school and work with an agency (even as an outside agent) that you will most likely not get the full benefits as traveling like a travel agent. Having attended travel school and working for an agency and also do these become a travel agent programs, I can attest to the fact that they do not offer the benefits that you are wanting if you would like to be an travel agent. Unless you decide to spend most of your waking hours to build the actual client base you will need to make it happen.

A friend of mine tried the life as a tour operator for a while - not as glamorous as being a travel agent sounds, but they certainly got to travel a lot. Unfortunately, they were too busy making other people happy to enjoy travelling themselves. I think most travel agents - unless working with big companies, have to work very hard. Supposedly the benefits in terms of staff discounts for a travel agency staffer are good, but probably not massive enough to outweigh the poor pay the local ones seem to offer.
