You are so correct, its not just about prices its about service as well, for a flight bish, bosh bash sure you use Expedia whatever, but when you want to do a tour of somewhere slightly out of the ordinary like Sri Lanka and you are going to be staying at different location the personal touch and good customer service is generally far superior to faceless websites.

I use independant web sites for hotel bookings, but I haven't for flights yet. What I usually do is use a screen-scraper web site that will list the prices from a huge number of different booking companies, then book with whichever is the cheapest. There are so many choices out there that this works quite well. I could imagine the smaller sites being good for more unusual destinations, but when you're flying locally within europe, or to the USA, then the airlines usually seem to offer the best deals themselves.

I've noticed that even though the price for say, a hotel ticket, or your car booking, can be more expensive on Expedia and similar web sites, you can get a much cheaper package off them if you book everything together. It doesn't always work, but it is worth trying to price each thing separately, and then as a package, just to see if there is any difference. Just be careful with Expedia that you get everything on your booking form exactly right - I made a mistake once with my card, it went through, but I got a call asking for my cvv number the day I was due to travel. I gave them it, and they billed me, but they never told the hotel I was coming. I was most annoyed! It did get sorted out in the end, but it was hardly the ideal start to a holiday.
