Save Money With Gas Credit Cards

Since so many of the major credit card companies offer a gas card, there are a number of great offers out there at the moment as the companies try to differentiate themselves.  Many of the cards offer a cash back scheme where at the end of the year a percentage of your spends are credited back to the card.  Other companies are offering an interest rate of zero percent as an introductory offer – usually for either six months or one year.

The Discover Platinum Card With Cash Back

The Discover Platinum Card offers a cash back rate of five percent on the first $1200 dollars spent on gas and vehicle repairs each year.  For most people, the $1200 limitation is very generous and they should not exceed this in a typical year.  If this applies to you, then consider this card for your gas and automotive purchases.

PerfectCard Mastercard from Chase

Chase offers the PerfectCard Master Card to its customers with six percent rebates on gasoline for the first three months; after the first three months the gas credit card will give three percent cash back on future gas purchases.

The maximum rebate on these cards is fifteen dollars each month; to achieve the maximum of fifteen dollars in rebates the credit card user must spend $500 each month.

The Blue Card From American Express

Amex Blue Card from American Express has cash rebates between one and five percent cash back on gasoline purchases; this gas card bases the amount the buyer will receive in rebate on purchases by how much money they have spent with the card for that year to date.

The Blue card offers one percent cash back on all gasoline purchases up to an impressive $6,500 total year to date purchases; as of the $6,501 spent year to date, the customer will receive five percent cash back.  This makes it an ideal card for people who drive a lot each year.

BP Visa Card From Chase

Chase gives its BP Visa cardholders five percent rebate on purchases made at BP gas locations; this gas credit card will also give its customers one percent rebate on all other gasoline purchases, with bonus percentages for lodging, dining, and other travel costs.

Saving Money With Gas Cards

It is easy to fool yourself into thinking that saving money with a gas credit card just means remembering to use it each time you top up the fuel in your car.  In reality, it is not quite that simple – you must remember to pay up the balance every month to avoid interest charges.  Also, if you want to make the most of the card, use the rebate money on automotive purchases as well, and in many cases you can be racking up even more savings for the following year.

Once the zero percent offers are finished, most gas credit cards have a higher annual percentage rate than regular credit cards, so you should avoid holding a balance on the cards whenever possible, otherwise the interest you get charged will negate the rebates, and instead of saving money, you will be losing money in interest payments.

Great idea.  I've also seen a lot of gas cards offering money back for new customers which will save even more money.  Gas is so expensive and if you can find anyway to save money it helps.  Of course some gas stations actually will offer cash discounts to encourage people to come into the store and do some impulse shopping instead of just paying at the pump.  And, of course, check out sites like gasbuddy.com to find the lowest prices in your area.  Just be sure you aren't driving so far out of your way for cheap gas that you're burning up the savings.
