Travel Tips — Staying Healthy On Holiday

It is never fun to be ill, but feeling unwell on holiday is even worse.  You want to go out, have fun, and see new places, but instead you are stuck in your hotel room all day.  Perhaps worse, you can't see your usual doctor, and you probably didn't bring your usual brands of medication with you either.

There are a few travel tips that can help you stay fit and healthy during your vacation, and will reduce some of the stress and discomfort should you become ill.

Before you Go

Talk to your doctor well in advance of your trip and make sure your immunizations are up to date.  Some countries require specific vaccines or a course of treatment such as anti-malaria drugs before you go.  For others, you just really want to be up to date with the basics like your tetanus jab. Motion sickness is caused by the brain receiving mixed signals about movement from your eyes and your inner ear.  This can be aggravated in certain situations – such as if you are attempting to read in a bumpy vehicle.  If your eyes say that you are stationary, but your ear detects movement, then your brain will become confused.  Your brain will assume that you are hallucinating, and will cause you to feel nauseous to encourage you to expel any poisons you may have ingested.

Curing or Preventing Motion Sickness

Motion sickness is something that a great deal of people suffer from to one degree or another, and most will agree that it can ruin a trip.  Motion sickness is caused by the inner ear and the eye sending different signals to the brain – the eye sees that the body is stationary, but the inner ear detects movement – a rocking or vibration motion, for example.
